Back to Was LaRouche a "psychopath"?

The "Dark Triad of personality": Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and Psychopathy.

The Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) test

A number of mind-controlling cult leaders may exhibit many of the behavioral characteristics of a sociopath--an outstanding ability to charm and seduce followers. Since they appear apparently normal, they are not easily recognizable as deviant or disturbed. Although only a trained professional can make a diagnosis of whether or not someone is a sociopath, it is important to be able to recognize the personality type in order to avoid further abuse. These traits also apply to a one-on-one cultic relationship. (*)

Traits assessed by the PCL-RScores (0, 1 or 2 pts)
Factor 1: Aggressive narcissism
01. Glibness/Superficial Charm2
Language can be used without effort by them to confuse and convince their audience. Captivating storytellers that exude self-confidence, they can spin a web that intrigues others. Since they are persuasive, they have the capacity to destroy their critics verbally or emotionally.
02. Grandiose (exaggeratedly high) sense of self-worth2
''Feels entitled to certain things as "their right." Craves adulation and attendance. Must be the center of attention with their own fantasies as the "spokesman for God," "enlightened," "leader of humankind," etc. Creates an us-versus-them mentality.

03. Pathological lying2
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and able to pass lie detector tests.
04. Cunning and manipulativeness2
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They dominate and humiliate their victims.
05. Lack of remorse or guilt2
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

LaRouche and condolences don't mesh. For him to have sent condolences to Jeremiah's parents might have seemed (to LaRouche) to suggest that he had something to do with it, or needed to care about it. It is LaRouche's complete lack of humanity which has betrayed him, time and again.
My information is that the ONLY reason Lyn wrote "condolences" to Molly Kronberg about Ken Kronberg's death is that he was getting extreme pressure from members in Leesburg to do so--including emails, etc.--and including from "ordinary" members.
Of course, he waited many many days to send anything--this for someone who had been in the organization 35 years and was well known to him personally--and when he did send his "condolences" to Kronberg's wife, the letter he wrote was positively frightful. Just nuts. Said basically Ken Kronberg's importance was that he worked for me, and you need to realize that.
Nothing about sorry for your loss, he was a great guy, he did great work for us, here's a gold watch--nada.
It was pathological, and even more pathological was that the cult was so proud of it they then printed it in the morning briefing and finally in the EIR! Obviously not realizing that it just showed what a cold, heartless, inhuman narcissist LaRouche is.
LaRouche tends to save his eloquence-in-death for people he doesn't know from Adam, like Indira Gandhi and Krafft Ehricke and John Paul I (read that memorial from the 1970s--amazing). Source: FACTNET.ORG FORUM: LaRouche Continued - Page 3
"MR. ROBINSON: (...) In this case as I think in any case it's important for the Court to look at the defendant's remorse and the defendant's acceptance of responsibility. I think what we have seen here this morning as we saw throughout the case, was in particular Mr. LaRouche's absolute inability to accept his responsibility for what took place here, his absolute inability to show anything like remorse." 06. Shallow affect (superficial emotional responsiveness)2
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion, it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.
07. Callousness and lack of empathy2
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them. Their skills are used to exploit, abuse and exert power. Since the follower cannot believe their leader would callously hurt them, they rationalize the behavior as necessary for their (or the group's) own "good" and deny the abuse. When devotees become aware of the exploitation it feels like a "spiritual rape" to them.
08. Failure to accept responsibility for own actions2
Not concerned about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blame their followers or others outside their group. Blame reinforces passivity and obedience and produces guilt, shame, terror and conformity in the followers.
Factor 2: Socially deviant lifestyle
09. Need for stimulation/ proneness to boredom2
Living on the edge, yet testing the beliefs of their followers with bizarre rules, punishments and behaviors. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal.
10. Parasitic lifestyle2

Living in LaRoLand
Localgreek--Lyn lives on a farm--not really a farm, but once was--a large spread of land called Windy Hill in Round Hill, Va. A map could be made available, but would no doubt result in what's left of Security shooting all of us.
The house is a nice old house, not as elegant as Ibykus, and not as big, but of the gracious country home type.
His "Security Staff" is run by Rick Magraw, of whom the less said the better. "Security" people and other enthusiasts do his cooking--there's a cook shift, to make sure the old boy gets his meals. Among his more adoring cooks is Barbara Boyd of Legal and other "investigative" pursuits (Babs is also the lady who nursemaids the LYM, paying their bills out of LPAC, of which she's the treasurer, and shepherding them to doctors, shrinks--think Ned Rosinsky, and the like--in other words, Babs is right up there in preserving the cult). She cooks for him on Sundays, I believe, and thereby maintains her status in the frog pond and drops a word in his ear.
There have been numerous other cooks over the years, some of them still active, but out of the kindness of my heart, I will not name them.
Lyn used to do his own laundry, or at least some of it, for reasons which I am embarrassed to mention.
This small inner core drives him around to doctors and whatnot, and to DC for his webcasts....
They buy his clothes, pay for his haircuts, buy his wine (some hilarious testimony on that score during Lyn's infamous deposition in the NBC case, some of which may be on laroucheplanet). This is the domain Rick Magraw oversees. I believe XLCR in the past has posted info about the bank account/corporation (based in Philly, as I recall) that Rick runs to pay for Lyn's lifestyle.
The guy hasn't done a thing for himself in decades, hasn't been out of doors without a "security" guard since 1974, hasn't lived without "security" in "his" house since 1974, and hasn't earned a paycheck since the late 1950s/early 1960s--if ever.
His entire life is vicarious and parasitical in the extreme. His sole pleasure comes in yelling at people, ranting and raving, either in print or to the small circle of zealots who sit at his feet.
Well, as Lyn would say, "It's a great life, such as it is."
11. Poor behavioral controls2
12. Sexual promiscuity2
Totalist leaders frequently practice promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts. This is usually kept hidden from all but the inner circle. Stringent sexual control of their followers, such as forced breakups and divorces, removal of children from parents, rules for dating, etc.

Larouche: "In all, I am going to make you organizers - by tasking your bedrooms away from you until you make the step to being effective organizers. What I shall do is to expose to you the cruel fact of your sexual impotence, male and female, in such terms that you can not deny this to yourselves. I shall show you that your pathetic impotence in your sexual life is a mere aspect of the same impotence you experience in political work — such that you will know that you can not cure the one without solving the other. I will take away from you all hope that you can flee the terrors of politics to the safety of "personal life". I shall do this by showing to you that your frightened personal sexual life contains for you such terrors as the outside world could never offer you. I will thus destroy your rabbit-holes, mental as well as physical. I shall destroy your sense of safety in the place to which you ordinarily imagine you can flee. I shall not pull you back from fleeing, but rather destroy the place to which you would attempt to flee." From THE POLITICS OP MALE 'IMPOTENCE'

13. Lack of realistic long-term goals2
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future. Many groups claim as their goal world-domination or other utopian promises. Great contrast between the leader's opulent lifestyle and the followers' impoverishment. Support by gifts and donations from the followers who are pressured to give through fear and guilt. Highly sensitive to their own pain and health.
14. Impulsivity2
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others. The followers only see them as near perfect.

He was probably in a mental hospital at some point. When you read all of LaRouche's crazy ranting about rats, sex with pigs, beetles with giant penises, and the rest it's obvious he was always a very sick person.
The delusion that LaRouche is some kind of philosopher and economist is an attempt to cover over feelings of self-disgust and impotent rage. Just like with some of his followers, it's pretty obvious. The ones who've posted here are examples.
Carol only said that he hit her once when she mentioned homosexuality and he sort of freaked out. It is in an appendix to Smiling Man. As far as I know there is zero evidence that he was a serial wife beater or that he had a mental breakdown in 1952-53, much less that he was hospitalized.

LaRouche's former common-law wife Carol also recalled:
Lyn was an abusive "husband" to me for sure. His specialty was giving me a black eye. [One] occasion I remember kind of vividly was when I innocently remarked that I could see how for men jailed for long periods of time, homosexuality could constitute a human relationship in an awful environment.
Clearly there was something that both fascinated and terrified LaRouche about homosexuality on a very deep level.
15. Irresponsibility (Unreliability)2
16. Juvenile delinquency (Early Behavior Problems)?
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet "gets by" by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.
17. Early behavior problems?
18. Revocation of conditional release0
Traits not correlated with either factor
19. Many short-term marital relationships0
20. Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility2
Changes their image and that of the group as needed to avoid prosecution and to increase income and to recruit a range of members. Is able to adapt or relocate as needed to preserve the group. Can resurface later with a new name, a new front group and a new twist on the scam.

Profile of a Sociopath at and from

When properly completed by a qualified professional, the PCL-R provides a total score that indicates how closely the test subject matches the "perfect" score that a classic or prototypical psychopath would rate. Each of the twenty items is given a score of 0, 1, or 2 based on how well it applies to the subject being tested. A prototypical psychopath would receive a maximum score of 40, while someone with absolutely no psychopathic traits or tendencies would receive a score of zero. A score of 30 or above qualifies a person for a diagnosis of psychopathy. People with no criminal backgrounds normally score around 5. Many non-psychopathic criminal offenders score around 22.
